First, the winners:
1st Place
Lei Jin Sunset at Berkeley Marina
12 x 16 inches
$1200
Juror Comments: I couldn’t stop looking at this painting—beautiful use of watercolor to capture the light on the body of water and the depth of the distant cityscape. Given water is one of the most challenging objects to paint in watercolor, the way the spray of waves and the light on their peaks was executed set this painting apart from others. The delicate sky wash with the addition of yellow creating a soft green as it blended with the blue is gorgeous.
2nd Place
Leslie Wilson Still Life
11 x 15 inches
$1200
Juror Comments: This painting was simply fun to look at. The execution of the impressionistic, free, loose technique makes the painting extremely interesting. It is an original approach to a still life. The composition is well thought out—the choices of where to lay the paint shows a level of enviable expertise and practice.
3rd Place
Rekha Joshi Beautiful Road towards The Home
18 x 12 inches
$650
Juror Comments: This painting reminds me of a Diebenkorn or Thiebaud using puzzled/severed forms for everyday objects. The steep perspective is unique and creative. The range of colors draws in the viewer. I see it as a two-dimensional object, but the sides appear to be folded with the definite vertical lines and darker hues in the side panels. It can be difficult to create value with concrete shapes, but this technique is well-done.
18 x 24 inches
$900
Juror Comments: This is a very original technique. The paint has a feel of thick application giving it a solid sense of motion. The color choices give an overall pleasing sensation. The artist’s control of the paint shows confident, expert handling. The painting keeps the viewer looking at it for more detail.
Linda Curtis Regrowth
30 x 24 inches
$450
Juror Comments: This painting has an exquisite quality with light. The color intensity suggests distance. They move the viewer from the intense foreground to the middle to the background. The painting has a subtle variation in areas with a narrow range of colors with varying tones, values, and temperature.
Ronald Bean Lovers Point
11 x 14 inches
$800
Juror Comments: The tonal range creates a warm, seemingly heated atmosphere. The sharp shadows create dramatic contrasts. Good value contrast! My eye keeps moving around the landscape of buildings, sand, and water. The execution of the background and use of purple proves complementary colors really work to make a painting pop.
Judy Rowe Pleinair in the Park
14 x 11 inches
$900
Juror Comments: If this painting were only done in pencil, it would be an excellent piece of artwork. The application of the watercolor in an impressionistic style show a mastery of the watercolor medium. This work is a high-key painting with intricate detail and an illusion of space with the contrast of light and dark. It is simply a well-executed two-dimension perspective drawing. Even the smallest object has well-executed detail.
